Apprenticeship at Law Centre (NI)

 

The Law Centre is able to offer an apprenticeship for law students who have secured a place at either the Institute of Professional Legal Studies at Queens University Belfast or the University of Ulster Magee course for 2008/2009.

The successful candidate may be based at either the Law Centre’s Belfast Office 124 Donegall Street or Western Area office 9 Clarendon Street, Derry.

The Law Centre’s areas of work are community care, mental health, employment, social security and immigration.  We will be able to offer advice, casework and advocacy experience in one or more of these areas alongside dealing with legal aid applications and an opportunity to gain experience of how the Law Centre’s areas of work feed into policy development.  An opportunity to contribute to Law Centre publications will also be available.

Terms and conditions

The payment for the post will be in line with the Law Society guidelines, i.e. £240 a week (pro rata for periods in the Law Centre one day a week) and with 24 days annual leave (pro rata) plus statutory holidays.

Criteria

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate a tangible commitment to at least one of the Law Centre’s areas of work or a track record of involvement in social justice issues.

The criteria for shortlisting will be:

Essential   Desirable

Experience of one or more of the following areas – immigration, community care, social security, employment or mental health law or a track record of practical experience and involvement in social justice issues

A knowledge of the voluntary sector

Advice giving experience

Advocacy experience

How to apply

To apply for the apprenticeship, please submit a CV and a covering note (of no more than two sides of A4) explaining how you meet the essential and (if appropriate) any of the desirable criteria.

The CV and covering document should be sent by email to Maura McCallion at maura.mccallion@lawcentreni.org .  The last date for submission of an application is Friday 8 August at 3pm so that we can let applicants know by email if they have been selected for interview.

Interviews will be held on Monday 11 August 2008 in our Belfast office.
