NEA demand response to
winter fuel crisis
This autumn has
seen massive and unprecedented increases in oil costs and an 11%
increase in gas costs. The Chancellor has been urged by the fuel poverty
charity Neighbourhood Energy Action Northern Ireland
to announce an increase in Winter Fuel Payments in line with these
increased fuel costs, and to extend the Winter Fuel Payment to low
income families and those with significant disabilities.
Majella
McCloskey, Director of NEA NI said, 'A massive injection of
resources is required not only to ensure that government meets its
proposed target of eradicating fuel poverty by 2016, but also to ensure
that the old and vulnerable in our community are not exposed to great
risk during colder weather this autumn and winter.' |

Immigration news.
Following public consultations, immigration detainees are being
relocated from the high security prison of Maghaberry to more open
facilities in Belfast, albeit still within the prison service. Women
detainees will be moved to Hydebank Wood young offenders centre along
with female prisoners. Male detainees will be transferred to a site next
to Belfast Prison.
The move will give detainees easier access
to families, support groups and ethnic minority community groups. It
will provide a less oppressive environment, although detainees will
still be held alongside sentenced prisoners and subject to prison rules.
The Law Centre and refugee support groups
have given the move a cautious welcome, although they are still
campaigning for an end to the detention of asylum seekers, particularly
in any type of prison environment.
More details on the detention of asylum
seekers in Northern Ireland can be found
here. |
