Aine Campbell

A warm and enduring presence

Aine Campbell died after a long battle with cancer on Tuesday 18 April 2006. How do you write a tribute to Aine? With great difficulty. Not because there is nothing to write about her (I could write a book) but because it is difficult to do justice to her personality through words alone. Aine was one of the most genuine, generous and lovable people I have ever known. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting Aine you will have remembered her as she left a positive impression wherever she went.
Most significantly, Aine has left her mark on the voluntary sector having worked in the Women’s Centre, North Belfast Community Development Centre, Craigavon Independent Advice Centre, Lisburn CAB, Law Centre (NI) and for a range of other voluntary organisations on a consultancy basis. She was committed to social justice and improving the lives of the individuals and groups who sought her advice and assistance.

As a Training Officer in the Law Centre, Aine was an asset to the team, always ready and willing to assist her colleagues. She brought a great deal of experience and wisdom to the team, but was also a ray of sunshine with the ability to make us laugh even when the pressure was on. Her positive attitude and outlook on life radiated throughout the organisation. She gained respect and developed a lot of friendships as she went about her work. She was also popular with the students attending the courses, many of whom rang to enquire about her when she was ill.

Aine is greatly missed by her friends and colleagues in the Law Centre and throughout the voluntary sector. However, her absence will be most profoundly felt by her family. Her love and devotion to her family was evident as she spoke proudly of their antics and achievements. During her illness, it was clear how much she valued the safe haven of love and support provided for her by her husband and children.

Aine faced her illness as she faced life, with dignity, courage and laughter. Above all, Aine had a warm and enduring presence that will be remembered and sadly missed by all who had the privilege to know her.
