A free spirit Pat Miskimmin collapsed and died suddenly at the Law Centre’s offices on Wednesday 20 March 2002. Pat was a volunteer with the Law Centre for nineteen years, looking after the library, cataloguing social security commissioner and court decisions, and producing a readily accessible index of case law for advisers. A large number of advisers and claimants owed their success at tribunals to her ability to locate and swiftly despatch a keynote legal decision. Her dedication to and fulfilment in working as a volunteer knew no bounds. When driving the round trip of 60 miles to the Law Centre from home each day became too much, she bought a flat in Belfast to allow her to continue her voluntary work. Pat’s contribution to civic society was immense. She organised annual collections for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, assisted with Riding for the Disabled, involved herself in cross-community children’s holidays and worked for the Citizens Advice Bureaux both as a volunteer and as a paid training officer. She had a deep interest in politics and was the honorary secretary of the Irish Association for ten years, working on improving cultural, economic and social relations between Ireland North and South. She was proud of her Irish roots and maintained her keen sense of social justice and progressive views throughout her life. She had been a shop steward for the Workers Union of Ireland while working with Aer Lingus and the first woman auditor of the Dublin University Law Society just after the war. Pat will, however, be missed most for her personal qualities. A highly intelligent woman, she had elegance and grace. She got on well with people and was warm and friendly with a sharp wit and keen sense of humour. She was meticulous in her work and any task worth doing was worth doing well. She was independent minded and a free spirit who enjoyed life and gave a great deal in return. She will be sorely missed by everyone in the Law Centre. Les Allamby Law Centre (NI) 2002
