Encyclopedia of Rights

Encyclopedia of Rights summarises Northern Ireland law on benefits, tax credits, community care and employment and includes benefit rates and examples of calculations.  There is also a section on immigration and marriage/civil partnership/cohabitation.

It is available free to our members as a CD-ROM, and can be read online.

Frontline

A quarterly magazine, Frontline provides news, features and in depth analysis on current issues in NI social welfare law and policy. With case studies and updates in key areas for those involved in advising on and administering social welfare law in Northern Ireland.

Frontline is free to members of Law Centre (NI). It retails at £1.95.

Annual Report 

The Annual Report is published in a magazine format. It is a useful guide to all of the activities of Law Centre (NI), with an overview of the performance and statistics of our work for the previous year. Human trafficking

The Law Centre has produced a new booklet for people who have been trafficked. It is in 12 languages and details their rights and where help is available in Northern Ireland.

Sanctuary in a cell & Sanctuary in a cell update

Published in 2001, Sanctuary in a cell is a report on the detention of asylum seekers in prisons in Northern Ireland.  The practice has now been discontinued, and immigration detainees are now routinely sent to detention centres in England and Scotland (see Forced to flee below).  The report remains an important document in understanding the specific history of Northern Ireland's treatment of asylum seekers.

Forced to flee

The Law Centre participates in the work of the Refugee Action Group.  RAG publishes Forced to Flee, a booklet to answer frequently asked questions about refugees and dispel myths about asylum.

Migrant workers

Your Rights in Northern Ireland: a guide for migrant workers

Published in association with the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission and ANIMATE. There are three booklets:

One for people from the European Economic Area (or EEA) covering Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland Germany, Greece, Iceland, Liechenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Rep of Ireland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland. (This booklet is also valid for people from the A8 countries who have lived and worked in registered employment for over a year in the UK.)

One for those from the A8 countries: Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovak Republic and Slovenia.

One covering nations where a work permit is needed to gain employment in Northern Ireland (for example Russia, India, China).

Social security

Students and Benefits is published in collaboration with NUS/USI, EGSA and the Adult Learner Finance Project. This joint project is a detailed guide for advisers to benefits and tax credits issues for people wishing to go into further and higher education.

Human rights

Rights in Progress, a guide for advisers on case law stemming from the Human Rights Act and the European Convention on Human Rights. The updated and expanded third edition was published in August 2007 can be ordered for £18.95.

Mental Health

Unmet Need: A study of mental health legal advice and information services in Northern Ireland, is a unique and wide ranging report written by Jim Campbell and Debra Wilson. It highlights gaps in advice and information service provision for this vulnerable section of the population. Available from the Law Centre's publications department for £4.95.
