Since 1977, Law Centre NI has delivered free and independent legal services in social welfare law areas. We work to promote social justice in Northern Ireland, using the law as a tool for social change. Our services are available to the public and also to advisers, with a special focus on specialist support services to the advice sector across Northern Ireland.
We work to achieve social justice through legal advice, casework and representation before the tribunals and courts. We work across the industrial, immigration and social security tribunals and in the higher courts before the Social Security Commissioner and higher courts. We have a particular focus on strategic litigation that brings about broader social change and through our research and policy advocacy, we work to secure progressive change to law, policy and practice.
Our services focus on:
- Employment law
- Health and social care law (community care)
- Immigration and asylum law
- Social security law
We support the advice sector across Northern Ireland through training, legal information, casework, and representation referrals. We take referrals from our members and from others who have identified a social injustice.
Through our public legal education strategy, we aim to ensure the public have the information and support they need to access and enjoy their legal rights in social welfare law.
We provide expert legal services (in social security, health and social care, employment, immigration and asylum) to people who live or work in Northern Ireland.
Our legal assistance services include:
- Advice lines
- Representation in tribunals (Social Security Tribunal, Industrial Tribunals, Asylum and Immigration Tribunal)
- Representation before the Social Security Commissioner on legally complex social security issues
- Representation before the higher courts on points of law
