The social security hub at Law Centre NI advises on the law relating to social security benefits, and provides representation before the Social Security Commissioners and/or at Social Security Appeal Tribunals. We prioritise our service on matters that raise complex or technical legal issues or points of public importance.
Our social security legal team give priority to advising on appeals to, and providing representation before, the Social Security Commissioner. This work covers all social security benefits and tax credits where a client is unhappy with a decision of an appeal tribunal and wishes to challenge this on a point of law. We will also pursue appeals to the Court of Appeal, and beyond if necessary, and can undertake judicial reviews in the High Court.
We have three dedicated welfare reform advisers and tribunal representatives. The Welfare Reform Support team advises and provides tribunal representation to claimants who require support due to the significant welfare reforms which are currently rolling out across the UK. This includes supporting claimants who are moving from DLA to PIP and those who are required to claim Universal Credit. The Welfare Reform Support team does not assist with filling out claim forms but rather assists claimants who wish to appeal a decision.
Our social security legal advice service provides specialist telephone advice on social security, benefit and tax credit legal issues (generally on referral from frontline advice agencies).
(Law Centre NI does not offer a drop-in service. Advice is provided through a telephony advice line with client appointments booked by caseworkers where a face to face meeting is required)
