Healthcare Skills Survey: Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Northern Ireland

Law Centre NI and UNISON Migrant Worker Project are conducting a survey of healthcare professionals from refugee and asylum backgrounds who have made Northern Ireland their home. The data will help us to work with the Belfast Trust to:

    1. Create employment opportunities within the health and social care sector asylum seekers i.e. to take advantage of the recent changes to the Shortage Occupation List.
    2. Identify and address barriers experienced by refugee health professionals.

We are really excited at the prospect of being able to support some asylum seeker healthcare professionals into work. In the long-term, we hope that medically qualified refugees will choose to stay in Northern Ireland rather than move to Great Britain to take up employment. This will bring many benefits to the individual refugees and their families as well as to the NHS and to wider society in Northern Ireland Ireland.
