Law Centre NI’s Annual Social Justice Lecture 2025

Law Centre NI’s Annual Social Justice Lecture 2025

On 4th June 2025, LCNI was pleased to host our Annual Social Justice Lecture in the Moot Court at Ulster University, Belfast.

We were delighted to be joined by attendees representing numerous organisations working across NI, and to welcome our keynote speaker Matthew Smerdon, Chief Executive of the Legal Foundation Education, who delivered an address on ‘’The law we need: community, solidarity and the pursuit of social justice’’.

Throughout this event, attendees were reminded about the importance of using the law as a force for good in addressing injustice as,

‘… the power of law isn’t only found in places of authority, precedent and procedure. It’s found in the connections between people and in what happens when the law becomes not just a rulebook, but a tool – for equity, justice, and for change’.

Additionally, this address provided an inspiring message to remain hopeful in times of great challenge and uncertainty in the pursuit of social justice,

To us, social justice means striving for a fairer society where rights are protected, resources are shared equitably, and people can shape the systems that affect their lives. It means supporting efforts that tackle the root causes of injustice and understanding law as something that must work hand-in-hand with social movements and community action’

For almost fifty years, LCNI have been working to advance social justice, and we look forward to continuing our work with individuals and organisations to achieve this across NI.
