In November of last year, the UK government published its policy paper, ‘A Fairer Pathway to Settlement: A statement and accompanying consultation on earned settlement‘. Law Centre NI joins many organisations across the UK’s migration justice sector in responding to the government’s consultation to object to the proposals.
The 'earned settlement' framework creates a tiered system of immigration rights whereby low-earning and vulnerable migrants are sure to be kept in cycles of prolonged insecurity, facing increased financial burden and the real risk of never obtaining the security that settlement brings. We reject these proposals - at minimum the government should not apply these rules retrospectively for migrants already here with legitimate expectations to settle.
