Migration Justice Project highlights urgent need for safe and legal routes for people to obtain sanctuary

We are heartbroken by the events in the English Channel yesterday where 27 desperate people lost their lives.

These deaths highlight the urgent need for safe and legal routes for people to obtain sanctuary.

In August, the government announced the Afghan Resettlement scheme – three months have passed with no action. The Northern Ireland Assembly has expressed its willingness to welcome and integrate refugees.

In the 2019 NI Life and Times Survey, 65% of respondents agreed that it was our duty to provide protection to refugees who are escaping persecution in their home country.

We call on the government to open safe and legal routes and abide by its international obligations as signatories to the 1951 Refugee Convention.
