Refugee & Asylum Forum Gathering 2026

Our Migration Justice team were thrilled to host the Refugee & Asylum Forum Gathering at the end of June, which brought together almost 100 people from across Northern Ireland’s refugee-support sector at Girdwood Community Hub in Belfast. We aimed to create a space where we could connect, find inspiration, and celebrate our work in all its diversity. As it was a day of celebration, and on the Refugee Week theme of ‘Courage’, we felt it apt to dedicate the Gathering to the memory of our dearly-missed colleague Ronald (Ronnie) Vellem.

We were honoured to be joined by UNHCR’s Vicky Tennant and the human rights campaigner and theatre maker Dr Pinar Aksu delivering our keynote speeches. Vicky talked about the global refugee context and the inspiration that UNHCR draw from the work of local communities. Pinar explored some of the challenges that migrant communities are facing, and reminded us of the power of community. Pinar encouraged us to create space for connections through Care, Compassion and Joy.

Artwork from made by young refugees from Barnardo’s Ubuntu service on the theme ‘Wear Our Courage’ provided the perfect backdrop to our discussions.

After a delicious lunch buffet served by Bomoko NI and plenty of home-baked treats made by the Kind Economy, we were wowed by the poet Mamadou Diallo reciting his poem, “Hey You, Refugee”. In the afternoon, we took part in some art workshops, learning from people who have made their home here as they shared their skills and passion for their culture: Secrets of Arabic Calligraphy, Dabke dance and The Art of Women, Life and Freedom. We thank all the amazing facilitators and Anaka and Beyond Skin for lifting our spirits through art and movement: Salwa, Mohammed, Naim, Alina, Mozhgan, Razieh and Darren.

Thanks to everyone who joined us on the day, and who continue to support the work of the Forum.
