Support for Working Mothers Affected by the Move to Universal Credit

Law Centre NI wants to hear from working mothers who may have lost out financially after moving to Universal Credit through the managed migration process.

We believe that some pregnant workers may have been unfairly affected by the rules that remove transitional protection when their income drops during maternity leave. We are particularly interested in hearing from women who:

  • Moved to Universal Credit through managed migration
  • Had their income protected initially through transitional protection
  • Where earning above the Administrative Earnings Threshold (AET) at the point of transfer
  • Later saw their earnings fall below the AET during maternity leave
  • As a result, lost their transitional protection and became financially worse off

Potential Legal Challenge

Law Centre NI is seeking to identify a Universal Credit claimant who has been affected in this way. We are currently examining the legality of the legislation and assessing its impact on new mothers.

Further details on this issue are provided in the tabs below.
