Response: Continuing healthcare (2017)

We urge the Department to commit to developing standalone guidance and an assessment checklist for its continuing healthcare policy. The Law Centre NI’s view is that the Department’s proposed approach is not feasible and will effectively end the policy of continuing healthcare.

Response: Future accommodation of older people (2014)

The HSCB have consulted on criteria by which the future of statutory care homes is proposed to be assessed against. We believe that the proposed criteria is too blunt, that residents should be fully involved in the decision making process and that appropriate alternative accommodation must be available to all residents of care homes considered for closure.

The current care system is often complex, focused on high level needs rather than prevention and creates regional variation in services. We support the underlying principles outlined in Transforming Your Care of personalisation; providing care in community based settings as appropriate and of ensuring that throughout the social care system people have choice and control about their care and support.
