
Course Overview
Who is it for?
This course is aimed at front line advice and support organisations and charities. It is designed to equip advisers and support workers with the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to confidently advise migrants on their entitlements to public services.
What does it cover?
This course provides an understanding of:
- Key immigration law terminology and concepts.
- Different types of visas including spouse visas, work visas, EU Settlement, Ukraine scheme, etc.
- Eligibility to public services – including social security, housing, education and healthcare – for each visa.
- An overview of international protection including asylum process and refugee status.
- The Immigration Advice Authority (previously OISC) and restrictions on giving advice.
- Being able to identify particularly vulnerable migrants and make appropriate referrals.
- Practical considerations including working with interpreters.
- The role of migrant support organisations in NI.
