Refugee & Asylum Masterclasses – 1 hour
Our 1 hour online masterclasses provide a comprehensive overview of specific topics related to the asylum and refugee system. These are aimed at individuals with a foundational knowledge of refugee and asylum issues. FREE for organisations delivering in the Belfast City Council area.
Pick and choose which masterclasses are relevant to your work, you are not required to attend them all. We will deliver 6 of these throughout the year, those who complete at least 4 sessions will receive a certificate from Law Centre NI.

Immigration advice v. immigration support
Wednesday 21st October 12 – 1pm, online via Zoom
Immigration advice is highly regulated, and people are right to be cautious about the support they provide. However, there are lots of ways that you can help migrants without straying into legal advice. This session will help you to understand where the line is and improve your confidence to support service-users.
Asylum support
Thursday 19th November 11am – 12pm, online via Zoom
Asylum support comprises of accommodation and/or subsistence funding. This is provided to eligible asylum seekers while their asylum legal claim is being considered. This session will cover the different types of support, who is entitled to it and how to resolve common issues.
Permission to work for asylum seekers
Tuesday 1st December 2 – 3pm, online via Zoom
Most people seeking asylum in the UK are not permitted to work. They may be eligible to apply for work permission after they have waited for more than 12 months for a decision on their asylum claim. If granted, asylum seekers are limited to working in specialised roles. This session will explain who is eligible to apply for work permission, what the process is, and what are the limitations even for those with work permission. This session will draw on our Permission to work and volunteering for asylum seekers guide.
Refugee “move-on” process
Thursday 7th January 10.30 – 11.30am, online via Zoom
Newly granted refugees are given just 42 days to secure an income and find alternative accommodation as they “move-on” from the asylum system. This change involves navigating several new rights and entitlements, such as the right to work and access social security, and can be a time of enhanced uncertainty and vulnerability. This session will draw on our Refugee Move-On Guide and ensure that you can support service-users more confidently.
Understanding Travel Documents
Wednesday 24th February 12.30 – 1.30pm, online via Zoom
Refugees are not entitled to a British passport and must use a Home Office travel document if they wish to travel outside the UK. A refugee who uses their old national passport risks losing their protection status. This session will cover who is entitled to each type of travel document, how to apply and common pitfalls.
Newborn babies & immigration status
Tuesday 9th March 2 – 3pm, online via Zoom
Children born to parents with protection status (refugee or humanitarian protection) are not automatically granted status in line with parents and must take action to have their immigration status regularised. This session will explain the routes to regularisation for different protection statuses, including asylum, refugee, humanitarian protection, Ukraine Scheme, Afghan Scheme. We will outline the importance of regularising a child’s status and the risks of not doing so in relation to accessing services including healthcare. We will also touch on citizenship eligibility.
